This saying speaks to me. The last couple of months, I've been working remotely from Japan 30 years after living there for 3 years. I wanted to see what had changed or remained unchanged there, and in me. So here are a few of my observations.
🎯 Get to the point or get to the relationship?
In my world – mostly western Europe, getting to the point and setting goals happens fast, even in an initial meeting with a potential client.
While I've been here, I’ve found that trust and connection still take much longer to build.
Initial conversations with my potential clients in Japan have been very polite and respectful, with subtle comments and references to our countries and cultures.
The emphasis is still on sensing and establishing a tacit understanding, rather than focusing on a plan, key items, and clear communication.
And less talk is definitely more.
Pauses are longer, giving space for thought – even when there’s no language barrier.
Hospitality matters too.
Although I'm told company culture is more casual today, I’ve seen more attention given to details like table setting and etiquette here. Beautiful teacups are appreciated and carry meaning.
Together, the nuances and consideration weave a pleasant and safe environment in which the relationship can unfold and trust is established.
Then, the concrete discussions or decisions can begin.
🪭 Remember to answer this question:
"What's the priority now, connection or clarity?"
I'll post some more reflections from the bamboo forest in the next few days 😊 ...
